The 4th UN Conference on LDCs, held in Turkey in May, reviewed the status of these 48 countries and the progress of the Brussels Programme of Action. An Istanbul agreement was passed that addressed a number of LDC concerns. Ahead of the conference, the UN released a report detailing the role of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the development of LDCs over the past ten years. In an interesting related item, IFAD and the US State department have announced an initiative to help emigrant laborers invest in their home countries, since the funds remitted by emigrant laborers exceed Official Development Assistance (ODA) and Foreign Direct Investment (FDI).
An annual report by the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) states the developing countries in the Asia-Pacific region will continue to drive the world's economy. The report also evaluates regional challenges, including high food and fuel prices.
